US Launches Deadly Strike on Islamic State Terrorists in Nigeria
President Donald Trump announced that the US military has launched a “powerful and deadly” strike against Islamic State terrorists in northwest Nigeria, who he claims have been targeting and killing Christians. The strike was carried out at the request of Nigerian authorities in Sokoto state, killing multiple ISIS terrorists.
Trump stated on social media that he had warned the terrorists to stop the slaughter of Christians, or “there would be hell to pay”. He added that the US will not allow Radical Islamic Terrorism to prosper, and that the strike was a demonstration of the US military’s strength and commitment to eliminating terrorist threats.
The Nigerian government has confirmed cooperation with the US on the air strikes, emphasizing its commitment to upholding the rights of all citizens, regardless of faith or ethnicity. However, Nigeria’s government has previously stated that people of many faiths, not just Christians, have suffered attacks at the hands of extremist groups.
The US Africa Command said the strike was conducted in response to the group’s targeting of Christians, but experts note that attacks in Nigeria often have varying motives, including religiously motivated ones, clashes between farmers and herders, and communal rivalries.
This move comes after Trump designated Nigeria a “country of particular concern” under the International Religious Freedom Act, citing systematic and egregious violations of religious freedom. The US has also restricted visas for Nigerians involved in mass killings and violence against Christians.
