Akufo-Addo to Lead Commonwealth Observers in Bangladesh’s Crucial Polls

Former Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo has been appointed to lead a 14-member Commonwealth Observer Group for Bangladesh’s 13th parliamentary elections and a nationwide referendum scheduled for February 12, 2026. The announcement was made in London by Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, following a formal invitation from the Bangladesh Election Commission.

According to the Commonwealth Secretariat, the Observer Group will assess the electoral process and provide an independent assessment of whether the elections and referendum are conducted in a credible, transparent, and inclusive manner. Akufo-Addo will be joined by experts from across the Commonwealth, including professionals in politics, law, media, gender, and election administration.

The referendum is on the July Charter, a post-uprising reform framework proposing wide-ranging political and constitutional changes. The Observer Group will be supported by a Secretariat team led by Linford Andrews, Head and Adviser at the Commonwealth’s Electoral Support Section.

“As we deploy our team to observe the elections and referendum being held concurrently in Bangladesh, we reaffirm the fundamental importance of credible, transparent and inclusive electoral processes in strengthening democratic governance and supporting long-term stability,” Botchwey said.

The Observer Group’s mandate is to assess the entire electoral process and determine whether the elections and referendum are conducted in line with national laws and democratic standards. Upon completion of its mission, the Group will submit a report containing its findings and recommendations to the Commonwealth Secretary-General.

The report will be shared with the Government of Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Election Commission, political parties, all Commonwealth governments, and made publicly available. This mission underscores the Commonwealth’s commitment to upholding democratic principles and supporting the aspirations of the Bangladeshi people.
