NPP Primaries Take Center Stage Amidst Minority Distraction Claims

The Minority’s recent press conference has been dismissed as a diversionary tactic by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), with Director of Field Operations, Hopeson Adorye, suggesting it’s an attempt to deflect attention from the party’s presidential primaries scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026.
According to reports, Adorye stated that the upcoming election will be a make-or-break moment for the party, with potential divisions looming. The NPP has released a detailed timetable for the primaries, with nominations opening on July 29, 2025, and the main election set for January 31, 2026 ¹.
The Minority, led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has been vocal about various issues, including the stalled anti-LGBTQ+ bill, illegal mining, and transport challenges. However, Adorye believes this is a deliberate attempt to shift focus from the NPP’s internal affairs.
Francis Asenso Boakye, Member of Parliament for Bantama, has thrown his weight behind Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, urging delegates to vote for him in the primaries. Asenso Boakye cited overwhelming support for Bawumia among party members and the trend of retaining candidates in Ghana’s leading political parties ².
The NPP primaries are being held in 104 constituencies, with some areas facing legal hurdles. The outcome of the election is expected to have significant implications for the party’s future.
The stage is set for a crucial election that will determine the NPP’s direction. As the party prepares for this pivotal moment, the nation watches with bated breath.
