Attorney-General Defends ORAL Prosecutions

Attorney-General Defends ORAL Prosecutions Amidst Criticisms

The Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has dismissed allegations that the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative is failing, attributing criticism to fears within the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) that its members may face prosecution. Dr. Ayine emphasized that his office’s diligent prosecutions are yielding results, sparking concerns among NPP officials.

Dr. Ayine’s remarks come amidst heightened tensions between the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition NPP, with the latter accusing the government of selectively targeting its members. The Attorney-General, however, insists that his office operates independently and without partisan influence.

The ORAL initiative, established to recover looted state assets, has been at the center of controversy, with some alleging that it is being used to target political opponents. Dr. Ayine has vowed to continue pursuing corruption cases, emphasizing that accountability is key to Ghana’s development.

In recent months, several high-profile individuals, including former government officials, have been investigated and prosecuted under the ORAL initiative. The Attorney-General’s office has also been working closely with international partners to track and recover stolen assets.

The controversy surrounding ORAL highlights the challenges facing Ghana’s anti-corruption efforts, with some questioning the government’s commitment to addressing corruption.
