No Ghanaian in Police Custody amid unrests– Benjamin Quashie
Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quashie, has assured the public that no Ghanaian national remains in police custody following the anti-immigration protests that erupted in parts of South Africa on Tuesday, June 30.
His assurance comes amid widespread concern over the safety of Ghanaians living in South Africa after demonstrations against undocumented migrants triggered police operations and arrests in some communities.
Speaking on the development, Mr. Quashie disclosed that although a few Ghanaians were briefly detained during the security crackdown, they have all been released following the intervention of officials from the Ghana High Commission.
He said the mission had been closely monitoring the situation from the outset and remained in constant communication with South African authorities to ensure the safety and protection of Ghanaian citizens.
The High Commissioner further appealed to Ghanaians residing in South Africa to remain vigilant, avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place, and cooperate fully with local law enforcement agencies as efforts continue to maintain peace and order.
The protests, organised by anti-immigration groups, saw demonstrators demanding stricter enforcement of immigration laws and action against undocumented foreign nationals. Although many of the protests were peaceful, isolated incidents of violence, looting, and arrests were reported, leading to increased security deployments in affected areas.
Mr. Quashie reaffirmed the Ghana High Commission’s commitment to the welfare of Ghanaians in South Africa, stressing that the mission would continue to provide consular support and closely monitor the evolving situation.
His confirmation that no Ghanaian remains in custody is expected to reassure families in Ghana and members of the Ghanaian community in South Africa, many of whom have been anxiously following developments since the protests began.
