EPA Cracks Down on Illegal Mining Machines

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has intercepted 14 containers packed with hundreds of Chanfang machines at the Tema Port, as part of its intensified efforts to combat illegal mining across Ghana. According to Joy News, the seizure is a significant blow to the activities of illegal miners who have been using these machines to destroy the country’s water bodies and ecosystems.
The EPA has been warning against the use of Chanfang machines, citing their devastating impact on the environment. The machines are used for small-scale alluvial mining and have been linked to massive pollution, siltation, and loss of aquatic life. The Authority has banned the fabrication, importation, sale, and use of these machines, and any workshops or shops found producing or selling them will be shut down.
EPA’s action is part of its renewed efforts to protect Ghana’s water resources and clamp down on illegal mining activities. The Authority has issued a final warning to individuals and companies engaged in mining within water bodies to halt such operations immediately.
The EPA’s crackdown on Chanfang machines is a welcome move, given the significant environmental damage caused by illegal mining. The use of these machines has been linked to the pollution of major rivers, including the Pra, Offin, and Ankobra.
The EPA has assured the public that it will continue to work with security agencies to enforce the ban and protect the country’s environment.
