Fire Races Through Tolon SHS, Leaves Trail of Destruction

A devastating fire outbreak at Tolon Senior High School in the Northern Region has left 346 students displaced, with five girls’ dormitories reduced to ashes. The blaze, which broke out around 7:20 am on Monday, February 2, 2026, was swiftly brought under control by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

According to Channel One TV, the fire affected the top floor of the girls’ dormitory building, with three dormitories in Gbewaa House, one in Furgurson House, and one in Tolon-Naa House destroyed. The incident has caused extensive damage to the already congested boarding facilities, leaving students stranded and without access to their personal belongings.

The GNFS has confirmed that no casualties were recorded, but some students experienced panic and distress during the incident and were rushed to a hospital for medical attention. School authorities are currently assessing the extent of the damage and putting temporary accommodation measures in place.

This is not the first time Tolon SHS has experienced a fire outbreak. A similar incident occurred in 2022, highlighting concerns about the school’s safety infrastructure. According to GNFS data, the service recorded 5,585 fire incidents nationwide between January and November 2025, affecting both residential and non-residential properties.

The cause of the fire is yet to be officially determined, but investigations are underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the outbreak. The incident adds to persistent fire outbreaks across Ghana, emphasizing the need for increased fire safety measures.

The school administration and local authorities are working to provide support to the affected students, with temporary arrangements expected to be made to accommodate them.
