Mahama Vows Accountability As Resetting Ghana Hits Wa

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to accountable governance and direct citizen engagement in Wa during the Resetting Ghana Citizen Engagement tour of the Upper West Region, unveiling sweeping interventions across infrastructure, health, education and job creation.

The engagement, held in the regional capital, provided a platform for residents to interrogate government policy and contribute to the national development agenda, with the President responding comprehensively to concerns on roads, social services and economic transformation. The forum forms part of a nationwide consultative drive designed to institutionalise transparency and participatory decision making.

President Mahama disclosed that government’s infrastructure strategy prioritises major trunk roads as foundational arteries for sustained economic growth before cascading into feeder networks that link agrarian communities to markets. On healthcare, he highlighted expansion of Free Primary Healthcare and the rise of National Health Insurance Scheme coverage to seventy six per cent, while ensuring maternal and child health services are domiciled closer to rural populations.

In education, the President reiterated determination to abolish the double track system by the end of twenty twenty seven, emphasising restoration of discipline, integrity and pedagogical efficacy in public schools. Addressing employment, he outlined the Twenty Four Hour Economy as a catalyst for private sector investment, additional production shifts and youth entrepreneurship, complemented by strategic investments under the proposed New Economy Programme, the Women’s Development Bank, construction of the Upper West Airport and support for local agricultural value chains.

The President also clarified contentious policy narratives, stating there exists no approved government policy mandating Arabic or Chinese as compulsory subjects in public schools. On the National Cathedral, he maintained that his objection centres not on the edifice itself but on its siting, the demolition of public and diplomatic properties and the deployment of public funds for its construction, remarks that drew sustained applause from attendees seeking clarity.

The Wa encounter underscores a recalibration of governance ethos toward citizen centred accountability, positioning the Resetting Ghana tour as a deliberative mechanism for rebuilding trust and co-creating development priorities as the administration navigates infrastructure deficits, economic restructuring and social sector reforms.
