NPP Official Arrested Over Cyber-Related Offences

Abubakar Yakubu, popularly known as Baba Amando, Communications Officer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Sunyani East, has been arrested by the Bono Regional Police Command to assist with investigations into alleged cyber-related offences. The arrest is linked to Facebook posts reportedly mocking President John Dramani Mahama and other public officials.

According to #Ghana News Agency, Baba Amando was invited by the police for questioning but was arrested after it was discovered that he was required in Accra instead. The NPP has condemned the arrest, describing it as unwarranted and troubling for Ghana’s democratic credentials.

The party views this development as another example of the growing use of state security agencies to intimidate and silence dissenting voices under the current administration. “The NPP strongly condemns the arrest of Abubakar Yakubu, describing the action as unwarranted and deeply troubling for Ghana’s democratic credentials,” the party said in a statement.

Baba Amando’s lawyer, Alfred Tuah-Yeboah, a former Deputy Attorney General, accompanied him to the police station, expressing concern over the circumstances surrounding the arrest. The NPP believes the incident raises serious questions about free speech and civil liberties in the country.

The party has called on Ghanaians to remain vigilant and resist any attempts to undermine democratic freedoms, urging authorities to uphold due process and protect citizens’ rights.
