Queiroz Rejects Resignation After Shock Gambia Defeat
Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has rejected calls for his resignation after Ghana suffered a 4-2 defeat to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday, September 29, 2026. The Portuguese coach said the loss in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier should serve as a lesson, not a reason to quit.
Queiroz admitted Ghana controlled the first half and led 2-0 through goals from Ernest Nuamah and Felix Afena-Gyan before mistakes allowed The Gambia to mount a comeback. He told reporters that resigning would be the easiest solution but would not fix the deeper challenges facing Ghana football.
The former Real Madrid and Portugal coach stressed that his future lies with the Ghana Football Association and results on the pitch. He stated clearly that the defeat does not define him, saying it only makes him more alert to lessons needed for future games, with or without him in charge.
Queiroz added that the Black Stars cannot take a step back after surrendering a two-goal lead when fans expected three or four goals. He said the technical team must be better prepared and better organised for the remaining qualifiers, according to details from the post-match press conference.
His comments come amid growing pressure from fans after Ghana’s inconsistent run in the AFCON qualifiers. The GFA is yet to officially respond to calls for the coach’s dismissal as attention shifts to the next round of matches.
