Women March In Accra Over Free Speech Threats
A broad coalition of women on Tuesday, September 29, 2026 took to the streets of Accra to demand justice, equality and protection of constitutional rights amid what they described as growing threats to free speech. The peaceful demonstration under the banner Womens Voices Matter started at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly Park at 6:00 a.m. and moved through principal streets to the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection.
The march was convened by gender advocates Akosua Asaa Manu and Grace Akosua Amoabeng, and drew market women, hairdressers, dressmakers, kayayei and other groups beyond political structures. Women from different political backgrounds also joined, including Peoples National Party Chairperson Janet Asana Nabla, NDP Leader Betty Akuffo Amoabeng and LGP Running Mate Elizabeth Sam, making it a broad-based mobilisation.
Protesters carried placards that read Dont Abuse Peoples Rights Because Your Wife Is Hurt and Madam Speak Again Against Abuse, raising concerns over recent arrests linked to political commentary and social media activity. One case cited was that of 40-year-old mother of three Salomey Awity Baffoe, who was arrested in connection with investigations into the social media account known as Ghana Jollof and arraigned before court.
Organisers stressed that the demonstration was not about a single case but about broader concerns on due process, human dignity and freedom of expression. They called for enforcement of the law to respect constitutional freedoms and insisted citizens should criticise within the law without fear of arbitrary treatment, according to the petition presented to the sector Minister.
At the Ministry of Gender, the women presented their petition to Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, chanting Enough is Enough and demanding action to protect womens rights and dignity. The cross-party presence was notable, with leaders saying the demands transcended partisan interests and united women around justice and equality in Ghana.
