President John Dramani Mahama began his engagements on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York on Sunday September 21 2026 with a strategic meeting with Alex Soros, Chairman and Founder of Open Society Foundations, to explore partnerships for ECOWAS integration.
According to the Presidency, Mr Soros, an investor and philanthropist who has previously engaged with President Mahama, and his organisation are interested in exploring partnerships and providing support for ECOWAS integration efforts across West Africa.
Sunday meeting was a precursor to a planned presidential roundtable engagement being coordinated by the Foundation with a select group of global foundation presidents and CEOs including Gates, Ford, OSF, Hewlett Packard, Hilton, Rockefeller, Humanity United, Anglo American, Chandler and USB Optimus among others.
President Mahama who is leading Ghana delegation to UNGA 81 is expected to push Ghana reset agenda on global stage while courting strategic philanthropy for regional stability. ECOWAS integration has faced setbacks from coups and trade barriers, with Ghana positioning as anchor for democratic governance and free movement.
This is an evergreen diplomatic framework where United Nations General Assembly convenes 193 member states annually in New York to debate peace, security and development. Side meetings like the Open Society Foundations roundtable allow presidents to secure funding for governance, climate and health. Open Society Foundations founded by George Soros and now chaired by Alex Soros operates in over 100 countries supporting justice, democratic participation and economic equity.
The Foundation CEOs roundtable is expected to discuss innovative financing for West Africa with Ghana expected to benefit from renewed donor confidence under Mahama administration.
