High Court Denies Bail To Nurse In Ghana Jollof TikTok Case
The High Court has denied bail to 40-year-old Senior Nursing Officer Salomey Awiti Baffoe who is facing charges of allegedly abetting the publication of false news in connection with the Ghana Jollof TikTok case. The ruling was delivered in Accra.
The court cited ongoing cyber-related investigations and risk of witness interference as reasons for refusing bail. The judge said releasing the accused at this stage could compromise digital evidence gathering.
According to the High Court, the prosecution must expedite the case and conclude cyber forensic analysis quickly. The court directed that the matter should not suffer undue delay while the accused remains in custody.
The Ghana Jollof TikTok case involves allegations of false news publication on TikTok which prosecutors say caused public alarm and reputational harm. Salomey Awiti Baffoe is accused of abetting the publication.
Under Ghana’s Criminal Offences Act and Electronic Communications Act, publication of false news that causes fear and panic is a criminal offence with fines and jail terms. Cybercrime investigations often require analysis of phones, accounts and digital footprints.
The defence team led by Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah had argued for bail, saying the accused is a senior nursing officer with fixed residence. The court however held that the risk of interference outweighs personal circumstances at this stage.
