Counsel for Salomey Awiti Bafoh, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, says the defence disagrees with the High Court’s decision to refuse her bail application in the Ghana Jollof case. The case was heard in Accra.
Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah told the court that the defence considers the refusal harsh given the circumstances of the accused. He argued that Salomey Awiti Bafoh should be granted bail while the trial continues.
According to the defence, the High Court also directed that the case be heard virtually going forward. The court said virtual hearing will ensure speed and reduce logistical challenges.
The Ghana Jollof case has attracted public attention due to its unusual name and the serious charges involved. Prosecution is expected to call witnesses virtually under the new directive.
Under Ghana’s Criminal Procedure Code, bail remains at the discretion of the court based on flight risk, seriousness of offence and public interest. Defence lawyers say they may file a fresh application if conditions change.
The virtual hearing order aligns with the judiciary’s e-justice programme aimed at speeding up trials and reducing remand overcrowding. The next adjourned date will see proceedings held online.
