Ghana Private Road Transport Union has confirmed an 8% upward adjustment in transport fares effective Saturday September 26 2026 after agreement with Ministry of Transport in Accra. The decision follows weeks of negotiation after GPRTU initially demanded 30% to cover rising operational costs.
Deputy Industrial and Public Relations Officer Samuel Amoah disclosed that the union sought at least 25% but settled for 8% after government assurance of further fuel price reduction in next pricing window. He spoke on Channel One Newsroom on Tuesday September 22 and noted operators currently run at a loss but accepted lower adjustment due to expected fuel drop and consumer burden.
The fare adjustment affects intra city trotros, inter city buses and shared taxis across 16 regions. Passengers traveling from Circle to Madina, Kasoa to Accra and Kumasi to Accra will see immediate increment at lorry stations from midnight September 26. GPRTU says it will return to the ministry if the promised fuel reduction fails to materialise.
According to Samuel Amoah, it is a promise given to us and if it fails we will still go back to the ministry to let them know that the promise has not been fulfilled. Then we will see what will help our operations. He explained that GPRTU is mindful of wider effect of fare hikes on market women, students and workers.
In Ghana transport system, fare setting follows negotiations between GPRTU, Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council and Ministry of Transport using fuel price build up, spare parts inflation and driver income sustainability. Just as CSSPS places BECE graduates into schools through computerized merit system, WASSCE grading ranks performance from A1 to F9, Free SHS policy absorbs tuition cost, Energy Commission licensing regulates fuel retail stations and Galamsey laws enforce environmental compliance, transport pricing balances public interest with operational viability.
Passengers are advised to check approved fare list pasted at lorry stations and report overcharging to GPRTU complaint desk. The union says next review will depend on second pricing window of National Petroleum Authority and cedi dollar performance.
