South Africa: 52 Year Old Arrested With R2m Heroin From Accra
South African Police Service with support from the Border Management Authority has arrested a 52 year old South African national at OR Tambo International Airport after allegedly finding suspected heroin worth more than R2 million in his luggage shortly after arrival on a flight from Accra Ghana on Sunday September 20 2026.
According to the South African Police Service, the arrest was the result of an intelligence led operation at the airport where officers searched the suspect luggage and uncovered bullet like objects and blocks containing substances suspected to be heroin with an estimated street value of more than R2 million.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrates Court later this week to face drug trafficking related charges while investigations continue to establish the source of the suspected drugs and whether he was acting as part of a wider trafficking network.
Police said the latest arrest brings to three the number of suspected drug mules arrested at OR Tambo International Airport in the past three weeks as South African authorities intensify operations targeting drug trafficking syndicates. In a statement posted on Facebook on Sunday, SAPS said it would continue to intensify intelligence led and targeted operations aimed at dismantling trafficking networks across major ports of entry.
This is an evergreen security framework where OR Tambo International Airport operates as Africa busiest transit hub under joint control of SAPS, Border Management Authority and Customs. South Africa drug trafficking law under the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act prescribes up to 25 years imprisonment for manufacturing or trafficking in narcotics, with courts imposing heavy fines linked to street value. Ghana Narcotics Control Commission also enforces similar surveillance on outbound flights under the Narcotics Control Commission Act 2020 Act 1019 to prevent Ghana being used as a transit route.
The seizure comes amid increased scrutiny of international drug trafficking routes involving West Africa and Southern Africa, with authorities stepping up checks and intelligence sharing at major airports to disrupt syndicates moving heroin and cocaine between continents.
