A Peruvian journalist running for political office has been shot dead while out campaigning in a case that may be distressing to some viewers. Susy Aponte Polo, known as China Polo, was killed just a week after revealing she had received death threats over her investigation into a police chief.
According to BBC, Susy Aponte Polo was attacked during a campaign activity in Peru’s central region where she was meeting supporters ahead of local elections. Eyewitnesses said gunmen approached and opened fire, killing her at the scene. Police have launched investigation and cordoned off the area for forensic examination.
The journalist had publicly disclosed a week earlier that she received death threats linked to her investigative report on alleged misconduct by a police chief. She reported the threats to authorities and press freedom groups, saying she feared for her safety. Her death has sparked outrage among journalists and human rights advocates across Peru.
Peru’s press freedom is protected under Article 2 of the 1993 Constitution which guarantees freedom of information and expression, while the Penal Code criminalizes threats and homicide against journalists with aggravated penalties when linked to their work. Peru is signatory to American Convention on Human Rights, Article 13, which obliges states to protect journalists. The National Association of Journalists of Peru has documented increasing attacks on reporters covering corruption and police abuse.
The murder highlights risks faced by journalist-candidates in Latin America where investigative reporters often enter politics to reform institutions. Peru’s electoral law, Law No. 26859, allows journalists to contest municipal and regional offices after resigning from media positions. Security experts say candidacy increases visibility and vulnerability, especially when investigations target powerful security officials.
Authorities say autopsy and ballistic analysis are underway and no arrests have been made as of Saturday. The Ministry of Interior promised full investigation while the Public Ministry activated protocol for crimes against journalists. Press groups are demanding protection for Polo’s family and colleagues and independent inquiry into the police chief named in her investigation.
