Residents and traditional leaders in Jema, capital of Kintampo South District in the Bono East Region, have staged a protest against the arrest and remand of their native Salomey Awiti Baffoe over the Ghana Jollof TikTok case. The demonstrators, including Nananom, youth and women groups, marched through the principal streets demanding fairness and immediate release of the suspect.
The protest follows the remand of Salomey Awiti Baffoe, who was arrested in connection with the viral Ghana Jollof TikTok investigations. In Jema, residents describe her as a native daughter known for her online content. Traditional leaders say they were shocked by the manner of arrest and the decision to keep her in custody while investigations continue.
According to community elders in Jema, the arrest has brought distress to the family and the traditional area. The Nananom appealed for calm while urging the Ghana Police Service to grant bail and allow due process to take its course. Youth leaders also called on national authorities to avoid stigmatizing the entire Kintampo South community because of the case.
In Ghana, Nananom play a vital role in local governance and dispute resolution. Under the Chieftaincy Act 2008, chiefs are custodians of custom and have the moral authority to intervene when natives face legal challenges. Their involvement does not override the courts, but it signals community interest and often helps secure sureties for bail, especially for first-time offenders.
The remand process in Ghana is governed by the Criminal and Other Offences Procedure Act. When a suspect is arrested for a bailable offence, the police may grant enquiry bail, while the court may grant judicial bail with conditions. Remand is typically used when investigators need more time to complete forensic examination of devices or financial records. Legal experts explain that protest by community members is a democratic expression, but the final decision rests with the court based on evidence, flight risk and public interest.
Tensions remain high in Jema as residents plan to petition regional authorities and human rights organizations. They insist Salomey Awiti Baffoe deserves a fair hearing and protection of her rights while the Ghana Jollof TikTok case proceeds through the justice system.
