KNUST Students Develop Bamboo Splitting Machine
The Innovation seeks to cut processing time and labour while producing uniform bamboo strips for industry.

Final-year Mechanical Engineering students at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have developed a locally designed bamboo splitting machine aimed at making bamboo processing faster, less labour-intensive and more efficient. According to a report by the University Relations Office, the machine automates the splitting of bamboo culms into uniform strips, providing a more efficient alternative to the predominantly manual methods used by processors.
The innovation is designed to support the production of bamboo-based furniture, handicrafts, decorative artefacts and other value-added products that require properly split bamboo as a raw material. The students explained that the project was conceived after they identified manual bamboo splitting as one of the major challenges confronting efficient processing. They said the conventional method requires considerable physical effort and time, particularly when large quantities of bamboo have to be prepared for production.
The machine addresses that challenge through an adjustable blade system that allows operators to determine the number of strips to be produced from a single bamboo culm. Depending on the production requirement, the machine can split bamboo into four, six or eight equal strips, with the adjustable blade mechanism allowing the configuration to be changed accordingly. The ability to produce relatively uniform strips is expected to improve consistency in subsequent manufacturing processes, while reducing the time and physical effort required during the initial stage of bamboo processing.
The students said the decision to focus on bamboo splitting was informed by the importance of processed bamboo in the production of a range of commercial and artisanal products. Once split, bamboo can be further processed and incorporated into furniture, artefacts and other products, making the efficiency of the splitting stage important to processors seeking to increase output. The project therefore combines mechanical engineering with the practical needs of bamboo processors by seeking to mechanise a task that is traditionally performed manually.
Beyond reducing labour requirements, the machine could help processors achieve more predictable strip sizes and increase the quantity of bamboo that can be prepared within a given period. The students’ innovation also demonstrates the potential for locally developed engineering solutions to address challenges within Ghana’s agro-industrial and manufacturing sectors. By focusing on a specific bottleneck in bamboo processing, the project provides a practical application of mechanical engineering principles while responding to the needs of an industry with opportunities for value addition and enterprise development.
The development forms part of efforts by KNUST students to apply engineering knowledge to real-world production challenges and develop technologies capable of improving efficiency in local industries. With further refinement, testing and possible commercialisation, the bamboo splitting machine could provide processors with an alternative to labour-intensive manual splitting and contribute to more efficient production of bamboo-based goods.
