Iddrisu Links PPI Rise To Gold And Utilities

Ghana’s producer price inflation accelerated in July, reversing the prior month’s contraction as elevated global gold prices and persistent utility costs exerted upward pressure across the production chain. Data released by the Ghana Statistical Service show the annual rate climbed to four percent, from three point five percent in June, with a sharp month-on-month rebound following June’s decline.

Government Statistician Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu attributed the uptick primarily to mining and quarrying, the largest component of the Producer Price Index. He noted that stronger international gold quotations translated into higher input costs for the sector, which carries a weight of forty-three point seven percent in the index. The sector’s monthly inflation rose markedly, lifting its annual rate to three point five percent. Within the extractives space, crude oil and natural gas extraction registered double-digit annual inflation, while metal ore mining recorded a contraction.

The utilities segment also contributed significantly to the headline. Electricity and gas posted the steepest annual increase among sub-sectors, followed by water supply and waste management. The elevation reflects pass-through effects from fuel costs and tariff adjustments, which continue to cascade through industrial pricing.

Manufacturing presented a mixed picture. Annual inflation in the segment quickened, buoyed by sharp increases in fabricated metal products and leather goods. Conversely, non-metallic mineral products experienced a price decline, suggesting divergent cost dynamics within the broader industrial base. The overall Producer Price Index stood at two hundred and seventy-two point six, up from the previous month and above the level recorded a year earlier.

The latest reading underscores the transmission of global commodity cycles and domestic energy pricing into producer costs, with potential implications for consumer inflation in the months ahead. Policymakers will be monitoring whether the mining-led surge proves transitory or entrenches broader cost-push pressures.

With mining retaining outsized influence on the index, volatility in precious metals and hydrocarbons is likely to remain a key determinant of producer price trajectories through the third quarter.
