The bail application of former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been adjourned to October 15, 2026. The adjournment came after Mr Boasiako and his legal team failed to appear in court when the application was scheduled to be heard.
Deputy Attorney General and Deputy Minister for Justice, Justice Srem-Sai, was present in court for the proceedings and also announced the adjournment. The court was therefore unable to proceed with the substantive hearing of the bail application and has rescheduled the matter for October 15.
Chairman Wontumi is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence following his conviction for illegal mining. His bail application seeks to secure his release while the legal process concerning his case continues. However, with the latest adjournment, the court will now have to wait until October before considering the request.
The October 15 hearing is expected to determine whether the court will proceed with arguments on the application and consider the grounds being advanced for Mr Boasiako’s release. The former NPP regional chairman’s imprisonment has attracted considerable public and political attention.
Particularly because of his prominent role within the party and his involvement in Ghana’s political affairs. For now, however, he remains in custody while his bail application awaits its next hearing date.
