Thousands of graduates from Ghana’s agricultural colleges are pressing the government to urgently approve recruitment into vacant positions, warning that the growing backlog of unemployed professionals is undermining the country’s agricultural extension and veterinary services. According to #MetroNews, the call comes amid concerns that the lack of job opportunities is discouraging young people from pursuing careers in agriculture.
The unemployed graduates, who have been waiting for employment for several years, argue that their skills are being wasted and that the country’s agricultural sector is suffering as a result. “We are eager to contribute to the development of Ghana’s agriculture, but we need the government to create opportunities for us,” said one graduate.
The Ghana Agricultural Workers’ Union has also expressed concern over the situation, stating that the lack of recruitment is affecting the country’s ability to provide adequate extension services to farmers. The union is calling on the government to prioritize the employment of agricultural graduates to boost food production and support rural development.
Ghana’s agricultural sector is a key contributor to the country’s economy, but it faces numerous challenges, including limited access to modern technology and inadequate support services. The government’s flagship agricultural programs, such as the Planting for Food and Jobs initiative, have been touted as game-changers, but their success depends on the availability of skilled personnel.
The government has been urged to take immediate action to address the issue, including expediting the recruitment process and providing support for young agricultural professionals. The future of Ghana’s agriculture hangs in the balance, and the government must act now to prevent a brain drain in the sector.
