The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has taken to the streets of Sunyani today, staging a protest dubbed the “Yen Suro Ahunahuna Demo” over the arrest of its Sunyani East Communications Officer, Abubakar Yakubu. According to #Peacefm, the demonstration is a show of defiance against perceived intimidation and harassment of party members.
The arrest of Abubakar Yakubu, popularly known as Baba Amando, has sparked concerns about freedom of expression and democratic governance. He was picked up over allegations of offensive conduct, false publication, and circulating statements deemed likely to incite fear and panic, but has since been granted bail.
NPP National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, condemned the arrest, stating that the party will not be cowed by politically motivated actions. “We are not afraid of these actions or the criminalisation of free speech. We believe that democracy is under attack,” he said.
The protest, which drew hundreds of party faithful, youth groups, and residents, highlights rising political tensions and concerns over civil liberties in the Bono Region. Demonstrators marched through the principal streets of Sunyani, chanting slogans and displaying placards with inscriptions such as “No Freedom, No Peace” and “End Oppression Now”.
The NPP insists the protest goes beyond partisan politics, framing it as a national call to defend democratic values and civil liberties. According to the party, the demonstration is a response to a growing pattern of intimidation and suppression of free expression.
