In a dawn operation, the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has arrested more than 600 undocumented migrants, including hundreds of children, across parts of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region. According to #UTVGhana, the operation was aimed at curbing the activities of undocumented migrants and ensuring national security.
The GIS has confirmed the arrests, stating that the operation was part of efforts to enforce immigration laws and regulations. The migrants, mostly from neighboring West African countries, were rounded up from various locations in Kumasi, including markets and residential areas.
The Ashanti Regional Commander of the GIS, Superintendent David Asare, emphasized that the service would continue to crack down on undocumented migrants, citing concerns about national security and public health. He urged Ghanaians to support the service in its efforts to regulate migration.
The arrested migrants are currently being held at an undisclosed location, pending processing and possible repatriation. The GIS has appealed to the public to report any suspicious activities or individuals.
The operation has sparked concerns about the welfare of the arrested migrants, particularly children. The Ghanaian government has been urged to ensure that the migrants are treated with dignity and respect.
