Gruesome Murder in Agbakope Over Chieftaincy Dispute

A brutal murder has shocked the community of Agbakope in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region, as Jerry Agbati, a native of the area, was shot and cuttlassedĀ  to death amidst a chieftaincy dispute. The incident has highlighted the deep-seated tensions between the Adzomani Family, who currently hold power as caretakers, and the Agba Family, who claim to be the rightful kingmakers with terminal judgement to that effect.

According to #AgbakopeEyewitnesses, the Traditional Warriors of Lakpo were seen chanting war songs on the night of March 8, 2026, and into the early hours of March 9, 2026, questioning the Agba Family about the whereabouts of their newly installed chief, Hope Agba. The Agba Family had mounted surveillance to ensure the chief’s safety, but the attackers were relentless.

The deceased, Jerry Agbati, was one of the guards at the Agba Family gate, and eyewitnesses believe he was targeted by the attackers. Two gunshots were heard, but it is believed that Agbati may have been protected spiritually, only to be cutĀ  multiple times by his assailants using a cutlass.

The Agba Family has long claimed that they are the rightful kingmakers of Agbakope, but their inability to enstool a chief following the death of Torgbui Agba III paved the way for the Adzomani Family to take over. The installation of Hope Agba as the new chief earlier today has been met with resistance from the Adzomani Family and the people of Lakpo.

The public outdooring ceremony, scheduled for later today, has been cancelled. According to the newly installed chief, “I’m shattered and heartbroken by the perpetuation of this nefarious activity”. District Chief Executive, Victoria Dzeklo, has convened an emergency District Security Council Meeting to address the situation.
