President John Dramani Mahama has called for a renewed commitment to the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, urging African nations to support the Court’s work in promoting justice and human rights on the continent. Speaking at the opening of the 2026 judicial year, Mahama emphasized the importance of strengthening the Court to make it a leading international judicial body.

According to President Mahama, the Court has made significant strides since its inception, and it is imperative that African countries continue to support its work. “Now is the time to deepen our commitment to the Court, so that in 20 years, when we celebrate its 40th anniversary, it will stand as the leading international judicial body and a model for others,” he said.

The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights was established to complement the work of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights. Since its inception, the Court has made significant contributions to the promotion and protection of human rights in Africa.

Mahama’s call to strengthen the Court comes against the backdrop of challenges facing the continent, including human rights abuses and insecurity. He emphasized that a strong and independent Court is crucial for promoting justice and accountability in Africa.

The Court’s work is critical in promoting human rights and justice in Africa, and it is imperative that African nations support its efforts. The 2026 judicial year is expected to focus on enhancing the Court’s effectiveness and increasing its visibility.

As Africa continues to navigate complex human rights issues, the role of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights remains critical. Mahama’s call to action serves as a reminder of the need for collective efforts to promote justice and human rights on the continent.
