Repurposed Galamsey Machines Help Farmers

Farmers in Siiru, a community in Ghana’s Upper West Region, are optimistic about their future after receiving water pumping machines repurposed from equipment seized during illegal mining operations. The machines are expected to support irrigation activities, boosting agricultural productivity in the area.

The community has long struggled with water scarcity, making farming a challenging endeavor. The arrival of these machines is seen as a game-changer, enabling farmers to cultivate their lands more efficiently.

According to Citi Newsroom, the machines were handed over to the farmers as part of government efforts to redirect seized assets towards community development projects. This initiative aims to promote sustainable agriculture and improve livelihoods in rural areas.

The farmers are thrilled with the new equipment, which they believe will increase their crop yields and incomes. “This is a welcome relief,” said a local farmer. “We can now farm all year round, thanks to these machines.”

The Wa West District has been plagued by illegal mining activities, which have ravaged the environment and disrupted agricultural activities. Repurposing seized equipment for farming is a step towards mitigating the impact of these activities.

The community is hopeful that this initiative will mark the beginning of a new era of prosperity and development. As one farmer put it, “This is just the beginning; we expect more support to transform our community.”
