US Airstrikes Hit Sokoto, Suspected Lakurawa Terrorists Flee

The US military has conducted airstrikes in Sokoto State, Nigeria, targeting suspected Lakurawa terrorists. According to local officials, the terrorists were seen fleeing Tangaza Local Government Area (LGA) after the attack. The airstrikes, carried out on Christmas Day, were part of a joint operation with Nigerian authorities to combat terrorism.

The Nigerian government confirmed the airstrikes, stating they were precision hits targeting ISIS-linked terrorists. The operation involved 16 GPS-guided precision munitions deployed using MQ-9 Reaper unmanned aerial platforms. The government assured that no civilian casualties were recorded, although debris from the operation fell in nearby areas, causing some damage.

The US Department of Defense released a video showing the airstrike, and former US President Donald Trump claimed responsibility, stating the operation was aimed at protecting Christians from terrorist attacks. However, Nigerian officials emphasized the strikes were part of ongoing security cooperation with international partners, including the US, to address terrorism and violent extremism .

The airstrikes have sparked debate, with some questioning the legality and implications of foreign intervention. A diplomat and security experts expressed concerns, citing potential sovereignty issues and the need for Nigeria to address its security challenges independently.

The Nigerian government has deployed additional troops to the area to prevent regrouping of terrorists. The operation highlights the ongoing efforts to combat terrorism in Nigeria, particularly in the northwest region.
