US Forces Capture Venezuela’s Maduro, Wife in Midnight Raid

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were dragged from their bedroom by US forces during a raid that led to their capture, CNN reports. The operation, carried out by US Delta Force soldiers, involved explosions and low-flying aircraft in Caracas, Venezuela’s capital, and resulted in power outages in several areas.
The couple was asleep at their residence within the Fort Tiuna military installation when the US forces entered, multiple sources confirm. They were quickly moved to a military helicopter and transported to the USS Iwo Jima in the Caribbean, en route to New York City to face criminal charges.
US President Donald Trump announced the capture, stating that Maduro and his wife were being flown to the US to face charges of narco-terrorism conspiracy and cocaine importation. The US Attorney General, Pam Bondi, said Maduro will face American courts and additional weapons charges.
Venezuela’s Vice President Delcy Rodriguez demanded proof of life, stating that the government’s location of Maduro and his wife is unknown. The Venezuelan government condemned the operation as a “grave military aggression” and a violation of international law.
The international community is reacting to the news, with Russia condemning the US action as “armed aggression” and Iran denouncing the attack as a flagrant violation of Venezuela’s sovereignty. The US has imposed sanctions on Venezuela and has been seeking Maduro’s removal ¹ ² ³.
