A heartwrenching video of Lilian Kumah, widow of late Ghanaian politician John Kumah, has resurfaced, showing her weeping bitterly at his funeral. In the video, she’s seen muttering words of grief, appearing inconsolable. This comes after she remarried Samuel Aryeequaye, an Accra-based politician, on December 19, 2025, sparking mixed reactions on social media.
John Kumah, the former Deputy Minister of Finance, passed away on March 7, 2024, at 45, leaving behind Lilian and their six children. His funeral was held on May 18, 2024, in Onwe, Ejisu, attended by friends, family, and Ghanaian politicians.
Lilian, now Apostle Lilian Aryeequaye, has moved on with her life, with her daughter Huldah Kumah congratulating her on her new marriage. Some Ghanaians are questioning the timing, while others support her decision, citing Akan tradition, which allows a widow to remarry after completing widowhood rites, usually within a year.
John Kumah was a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics, serving as Deputy Minister of Finance and Member of Parliament for Ejisu. He was known for his contributions to Ghana’s economic development and his advocacy for youth empowerment.
Samuel Aryeequaye, Lilian’s new husband, is a politician and philanthropist. He’s a former mentee of Percival Kofi Akpaloo, leader of the Liberal Party of Ghana, and Managing Director of BSW Company Limited. The remarriage has sparked debate, with some focusing on Lilian’s personal life and others defending her right to move on.
The controversy highlights Ghana’s societal expectations of widows and the scrutiny they face when remarrying. While some cultures emphasize loyalty to the deceased, others prioritize the widow’s well-being and happiness. As Ghana navigates modernity and tradition, Lilian Kumah’s story has sparked a broader conversation about love, loss, and moving on.
