SHOCKER: Ato Essien Spotted Fit and Healthy at Government Event
Accra, Ghana – In a stunning turn of events, William Ato Essien, the founder of defunct Capital Bank, has made a public appearance at a high-level government event in Accra, sparking widespread surprise and outrage. Essien, who was sentenced to 15 years in prison for stealing over GH₵90 million in Bank of Ghana liquidity support, was seen looking fit and healthy at a press conference commemorating the signing of an agreement between Cybele Energy and the Government of Guyana.
Essien was convicted in December 2022 for embezzling funds from Capital Bank, which led to the bank’s collapse. He had initially agreed to pay GH₵90 million to avoid jail time but failed to fulfill the payment terms, leading to his imprisonment in October 2023. Essien was granted bail in July 2025 on health grounds, with a GH₵10 million bond and two sureties.
Photos shared on social media show Essien, dressed in a blue striped suit, attending the event alongside government officials, including Presidential Adviser Kofi Okyere Darko. The event was held to mark the signing of an oil exploration deal between Cybele Energy and the Government of Guyana.
The appearance has raised questions about the circumstances surrounding Essien’s release from prison and his current health status. Many are calling for an explanation from the authorities on how a convicted felicon like Essien ended up at a high-profile government event.
