GoldBod Defends Sammy Gyamfi Over Viral Mining Video

The Ghana Gold Board, GoldBod, has stated that a viral video circulating on social media misrepresents remarks made by its Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi concerning illegal mining, insisting that the clip was taken out of context to distort his position.

The clarification follows widespread circulation of the footage, which has been shared across political platforms and commentary channels, sparking heated debate and accusations that the GoldBod chief had downplayed the menace of galamsey.

According to GoldBod, “The viral video misrepresents CEO Sammy Gyamfi’s remarks on illegal mining and does not reflect his well-known stance against galamsey,” it said, urging the public to disregard the manipulated narrative and rely on official communications.

That rebuttal underscores the sensitivity surrounding discourse on illegal mining, a scourge that continues to devastate forest reserves, pollute river bodies, and undermine agricultural livelihoods, with public officials increasingly targeted by doctored content designed to inflame sentiment.

Gyamfi, who has championed sweeping reforms through the Ghana Gold Board including local refining, formalization of artisanal operations, and enforcement against illicit operators, has consistently maintained a hardline posture against unlicensed mining, positioning the institution at the forefront of the national fight to sanitize the gold sector.

Ultimately, the episode highlights the peril of digital misinformation in shaping environmental policy discourse, and reinforces the imperative for responsible reportage and verification, as Ghana seeks to preserve its natural resources while ensuring that public officials are judged by their full statements rather than selective excerpts.
