Benedict Amelorku Elected 60th NUGS President In Historic Vote

The National Union of Ghana Students has elected Benedict Amelorku as its 60th President following a highly contested election at the annual delegates congress held over the weekend. Amelorku secured a decisive victory after polling the highest votes to lead Ghana’s largest student front for the 2026/2027 academic year.

The election, which brought together delegates from universities, colleges of education, senior high schools and technical institutions across the country, was described as peaceful, transparent and historic. Electoral officials announced Benedict Amelorku as winner after collation of results on Sunday night.

Benedict Amelorku, a student leader known for his advocacy for student welfare and educational reforms, campaigned on a message of unity, accountability and revamping NUGS structures. In his acceptance speech, he promised to prioritize student accommodation, scholarship disbursement, and inclusion of all blocs within NUGS.

He succeeds the 59th administration and is expected to be sworn in together with other newly elected national officers in the coming days. Stakeholders in Ghana’s education sector have congratulated him, urging him to champion the interests of Ghanaian students both at home and abroad.
