President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that the firing squad execution of Fort Hood mass shooter Nidal Hasan in December will not be livestreamed, reversing the initial announcement by the Pentagon. CNN’s Alayna Treene reports.

The decision follows intense public debate after the Pentagon suggested the execution could be broadcast publicly, a move that sparked legal and ethical concerns from civil liberties groups, military families and lawmakers on both sides. Trump said after reviewing the matter, the administration decided livestreaming would be inappropriate and contrary to American military justice traditions.

Nidal Hasan, the former US Army major and psychiatrist, was convicted for the 2009 Fort Hood massacre that left 13 people dead and more than 30 wounded at the Texas military base. He was sentenced to death by a military court in 2013, and his execution, set for December, would be the first military execution by firing squad in decades.

Trump emphasized that justice must be served with dignity and respect for victims’ families, not as a spectacle. The White House confirmed that the execution will proceed as scheduled but will be conducted privately with only authorized witnesses, including victims’ relatives, military officials and legal observers, in accordance with military protocol.

The Pentagon has acknowledged the correction and stated that its earlier statement was premature. Legal experts say the reversal restores longstanding Department of Defense policy that executions are not public broadcasts. Human rights organizations welcomed Trump’s clarification, while some conservative supporters expressed disappointment.

More details on the execution procedure and final date in December are expected to be released by the Department of Defense. Read more: https://cnn.it/4jpLLnG
