The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, has paid a courtesy call on the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) in Ho as part of a two-day working visit to the Volta Region to monitor Rural Telephony Project (RTP) sites.

The visit forms part of government’s drive to extend mobile network coverage to unserved and underserved communities through the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC).

Speaking at his first stop at Akoefe in the Ho Central Constituency, where new telecommunications infrastructure has been constructed to improve rural connectivity, the Minister said: “The President has given us an assignment that every part of our country gets telephone connection.”

He disclosed that his own telephone signal dropped upon entering the community, highlighting the need for the intervention. “Since I became Minister, one of the people who has written letters and called me the most is the Regional Minister about the network in the Volta Region,” he added, commending Volta Regional Minister Hon. James Gunu for his advocacy.

On development in Ho Central, the Minister praised the area’s MP, saying: “Your MP doesn’t sleep in Accra. He’s chasing every Minister to bring development to Ho Central, so you have a worthy representative in Accra. Every Cabinet Minister attests to that.”

He assured chiefs that the amount of telecommunications infrastructure built this year alone exceeds what was built in the past five years combined, reaffirming President Mahama’s commitment to digital inclusion.

Hon. Sam George was accompanied by the Chief Executive Officer of GIFEC, Mr. Tanko Rashid Computer, the Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, and officials from the Ministry. The team inspected the Akoefe mast which is expected to boost voice, data and Mobile Money services for residents.
