“If you think muscles will protect your ballots, then you’ve lost the elections. Sofo Tanko, who is a former NDC parliamentary candidate and now heads GIFEC under President John Dramani Mahama, argued that elections are won through proper organization, vigilance, training of polling agents and credible data management, not intimidation. He said the NPP’s new leadership under John Boadu must move away from the old tactics of busing macho men to polling stations.

The GIFEC CEO noted that Ghana’s electoral system has evolved with biometric verification and transparent collation, making ballot protection a technical and intellectual exercise. He challenged both NPP and NDC to invest in intelligent party agents who understand electoral laws rather than relying on muscle power which often leads to violence and defeat.

Political analysts say Sofo Tanko’s statement is a direct jab at the NPP’s newly elected executives led by National Chairman John Boadu, who has vowed to reconcile the party with Kennedy Agyapong and win 2028. The NPP has in the past been accused by opponents of deploying well-built men to provide security during elections, a practice critics say fuels electoral violence.

As Ghana inches towards 2028, stakeholders say the focus should shift from machoism to smart election management. Sofo Tanko’s quote has sparked conversations on Metro TV and social media about how political parties can protect ballots legitimately without intimidation, as Ghana deepens its democratic credentials.
