Teacher unions have suspended their strike following an agreement with the government on new measures to address outstanding concerns over promotions, salary adjustments and allowances, bringing relief to parents and students across Ghana.

The unions, including GNAT, NAGRAT and CCT-GH, announced the decision after a marathon meeting with the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission in Accra on Thursday night. The strike, which had entered its second week, had paralyzed teaching and learning in public basic and senior high schools nationwide.

According to a joint statement issued by the three unions, government has agreed to a roadmap to clear promotion arrears, implement upward salary adjustments for teachers in deprived areas, and restore allowances for extra duties. A technical committee has been set up to monitor implementation with timelines agreed by both parties.

Government negotiators described the agreement as a win-win, saying fiscal constraints were considered while addressing legitimate teacher concerns. The Ministry of Education has directed all teachers to return to classrooms on Monday, October 12, 2026, as schools prepare to make up for lost contact hours.

Parents and education stakeholders have welcomed the suspension, calling on government to honour the agreement to prevent future disruptions. The Ghana Education Service (GES) has assured that academic calendars will be adjusted to recover lost time, especially for final year students preparing for WASSCE and BECE.

The unions warned that they will resume industrial action if government fails to implement the agreed measures within the stipulated time. For now, classrooms are expected to come alive again next week as teachers return to work after the deal.
