“One mechanised borehole constructed in Ajumako cost GH¢90,000. The project was approved by my engineers and the General Assembly” – Andrews Kojo Duodu, District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ajumako Enyan Essiam, has defended the cost of a mechanised borehole project in the district following public criticism over pricing.

The DCE for Ajumako Enyan Essiam in the Central Region said the GH¢90,000 figure covers full mechanisation, including drilling, pump installation, overhead tank, stand, reticulation and fencing. He explained that the project went through all procurement processes and received technical approval from the district engineers before implementation.

Andrews Kojo Duodu stressed that the General Assembly, which is the highest decision-making body at the district level, deliberated and approved the project in its budget. He said suggestions that the amount is inflated ignore the current cost of materials, fuel for drilling rigs, and labour in remote communities within Ajumako Enyan Essiam.

The controversy began after photos of the borehole circulated on social media with residents questioning the cost compared to similar projects in other districts costing GH¢40,000 to GH¢60,000. Some assembly members have called for an independent audit, while others have backed the DCE’s explanation.

The DCE urged residents to seek clarification from the Assembly rather than making unsubstantiated allegations on social media. He said the Ajumako Enyan Essiam District Assembly remains committed to transparency and will make its procurement documents available for public scrutiny if needed.

Local CSOs have called for the Auditor-General to review the project cost to put the matter to rest, as the debate over borehole pricing continues to trend across the Central Region, with many demanding standard pricing guidelines for mechanised boreholes in Ghana.
