President Donald Trump has announced that massive oil, gas and mineral exploration is getting ready to begin in Greenland. In a post on Truth Social early Wednesday, the US President described Greenland as “our new and beautiful Greenland” and claimed the amount of easily accessible oil and minerals is far greater than almost anywhere else in the world.

Trump wrote that “Massive Oil, Gas, and Mineral Exploration is getting ready to begin,” but did not provide details of US government involvement, companies involved, or timelines. Greenland, an autonomous territory under Denmark, is believed to hold vast reserves of rare earths, oil and gas critical to global energy transition.

The announcement comes weeks after Washington signed a new 10-page security deal with Denmark and Greenland, following months of threats by Trump to take over the Arctic island by force. The deal expands US military presence beyond Pituffik Space Base to include two new sites at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig, and is linked to Trump’s proposed Golden Dome missile defence system.

Trump argued that Greenland sits on the shortest route for any missile attack on the United States from Russia, saying US defences there will routinely knock down drones, missiles and future weapons. Greenland had halted new oil and gas licensing in 2021 over climate concerns, though existing licences remain valid. No official response has yet come from Copenhagen or Nuuk.

The United States has long viewed Greenland as strategically vital for Arctic security and resource competition with Russia and China. Environmental groups have already warned that opening the fragile Arctic ecosystem to massive fossil fuel extraction would undermine global climate goals, while supporters argue it could boost Western energy security.

More reactions are expected from the Danish and Greenlandic governments in the coming hours as the story develops.
