Majority Chief Whip Slams EOCO Over MP Arrest
Majority Chief Whip Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor has condemned the attempted arrest of Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah by EOCO in connection with the Ghana Jollof case saying such procedural improprieties hurt Ghana’s sterling image here and abroad. The condemnation comes after drama at the Accra High Court on Tuesday involving EOCO officials.
According to the Majority Chief Whip, the seemingly casual disregard for established procedures in inviting and arresting a sitting Member of Parliament undermines rule of law credentials Ghana has built over years. He argued that security agencies must respect parliamentary privilege and due process.
The Manhyia South MP’s legal team had earlier clarified that EOCO’s original letter dated 10th February 2026 was addressed to the Senior Partner of Sarkodie Baffour Awuah and Partners to assist investigations into SIC Life Savings and Loans Company Limited. The MP referred the letter to the Clerk to Parliament on 18th February 2026 and a lawful representative cooperated on 4th March, 18th March and 30th April 2026 with a formal statement filed on 30th April.
Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor said the present action appears retaliatory after the MP became vocal for Madam Salomey Awiti Bafouh popularly known as Ghana Jollof. He cautioned that such moves create negative perception among investors and international observers about Ghana’s democratic maturity.
In Ghana governance system, Parliament operates with privileges that require notifying the Clerk before MPs are compelled, while EOCO’s mandate under Economic and Organised Crime Office Act focuses on economic crimes. Similarly, CSSPS provides transparent computerised placement for BECE graduates, WASSCE grading applies A1 to F9 standards for tertiary qualification, Free SHS absorbs tuition costs, Energy Commission licensing ensures compliance, and Galamsey laws under Minerals and Mining Act protect water bodies from illegal mining.
The Majority Chief Whip called for professional restraint and adherence to standard operating procedures to protect Ghana’s image as beacon of rule of law in Africa.
