NPP Cancels Mfantseman Election, Orders Research Officer’s Suspension

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has cancelled the election recently conducted in the Mfantseman Constituency of the Central Region, declaring the exercise “null and void” after establishing that key party authorities were not aware of the election. In a memorandum dated August 13, 2026, the NPP’s Acting National Chairman, Danquah Buttey Smith, directed that the election be cancelled with immediate effect.

The memorandum, addressed to the Central Regional Chairman, stated that the party’s National Headquarters, the Regional Chairman, the Constituency Chairman and the Constituency Election Committee were not aware of the conduct of the election. According to the party, the circumstances surrounding the exercise amounted to a serious breach of its established procedures and directives governing constituency elections. “Accordingly, the election is hereby declared null and void and cancelled with immediate effect,” the memorandum stated.

The decision effectively means that the outcome of the disputed election cannot be recognized as binding on the party or its members. In a further directive, the Acting National Chairman ordered the Research Officer of the region to be suspended immediately and referred to the party’s disciplinary committee.

The officer is to face further investigations and possible disciplinary action in accordance with the NPP’s rules and regulations. The party said the directive followed the circumstances surrounding what it described as the unauthorized conduct of the election. It also instructed all persons concerned not to treat the cancelled election or its outcome as valid or binding.

The NPP said arrangements would be made for a fresh and properly authorized constituency election. According to the memorandum, the appropriate party authority will issue a new directive indicating the date and other arrangements for the conduct of the election. The party did not state in the memorandum when the replacement election would be held.

The latest development places the Mfantseman Constituency election process on hold pending fresh arrangements and the outcome of the disciplinary process. The NPP further appealed to all stakeholders to remain calm and strictly adhere to official party directives. It said compliance with the established procedures was necessary to safeguard the integrity, transparency and orderly conduct of its internal elections.

The cancellation comes as the party continues its internal electoral processes across constituencies, making adherence to its approved procedures critical to the legitimacy of constituency-level contests and their outcomes.
