Minority Brands 2026 Budget As ‘Kwashiorkor’
The Minority Caucus in Parliament has launched a scathing critique of the government’s 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review, arguing that the fiscal update confirms its long-held view that the administration has failed to translate its promises into meaningful action.
Addressing a press conference shortly after the Finance Minister presented the review in Parliament, the caucus described the government’s economic performance as disappointing, insisting that the budget update lacked the bold policy interventions needed to address the country’s economic challenges.
Former Finance Minister and Member of Parliament for Karaga, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, who spoke on behalf of the Minority, maintained that the review had vindicated the opposition’s earlier assessment of the 2026 Budget. “This government, from what has been submitted in Parliament, can best be described as a ‘Talk More, Do Little’ government because the Budget Review has confirmed our description of the 2026 Budget as having only bones, no meat, and for that matter, a kwashiorkor budget.”
The Minority argued that while the government highlighted improvements in selected macroeconomic indicators, the review offered little in terms of concrete measures to improve the living conditions of ordinary Ghanaians. It contended that businesses continue to struggle, job creation remains inadequate and many households are yet to experience any meaningful economic relief.
The caucus further accused the government of placing greater emphasis on public relations than policy implementation, asserting that several flagship programmes announced at the beginning of the year have seen limited progress despite repeated assurances.
It also raised concerns over the government’s fiscal management, questioning the credibility of some of the figures presented and calling for greater transparency in the reporting of revenue mobilisation, expenditure, debt management and the execution of key development programmes.
According to the Minority, the Mid-Year Budget Review represented a missed opportunity to introduce decisive interventions capable of accelerating economic growth, supporting the private sector and easing the burden on citizens facing persistent economic hardships.
The caucus reaffirmed its commitment to holding the government accountable for the implementation of the 2026 Budget and pledged to continue scrutinising every fiscal policy to ensure that public resources are managed prudently and in the best interest of the Ghanaian people.
