Government Rolls Out Future-Ready Curriculum for Basic Schools
The government is set to introduce coding, artificial intelligence (AI), electronics, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), and ethics into Ghana’s basic school curriculum under a major reform aimed at preparing learners for a technology-driven future.
Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, announced that the revised curriculum, which covers learners from kindergarten to junior high school, will be presented to the Ministry of Education before being submitted to President John Dramani Mahama for consideration and subsequently to Cabinet and Parliament for approval.
Speaking to the Media on Monday, July 20, the minister described the curriculum review as a significant step toward modernizing Ghana’s education system. Noting the it would be presented to the Ministry of Education “I am happy to note that on Wednesday, a revised curriculum for all pupils from kindergarten to junior high school will be presented formally to the Ministry of Education for onward submission to the President and for the policy to go to Cabinet and Parliament,” he said.
Hon Iddrisu explained that the overhaul is intended to create a smarter curriculum that integrates technology and STEM education more effectively. “The revision of our curriculum is to ensure a smart curriculum for greater integration of technology, science, engineering and mathematics. We have promised to introduce coding, electronics, artificial intelligence, and TVET into the basic education curriculum,” he stated.
The Minister again disclosed that 12.2 million sanitary pads have been distributed nationwide to aid approximately 2.5 million female students in the Junior High and Senior High Schools.
The reform is expected to equip pupils with practical, innovation-driven skills from an early age while strengthening values such as patriotism, integrity and responsible citizenship, positioning Ghanaian learners to compete effectively in an increasingly digital and global economy with nothing serving as a hindrance.
