Mahama Nominates Three to Supreme Court Bench
President John Dramani Mahama has nominated three distinguished jurists for appointment to the Supreme Court, a move that will recalibrate the composition of Ghana’s apex court and strengthen its adjudicatory capacity.
The nominees are Court of Appeal Justices Sophia Bernasko-Essah and Amoako Asante, alongside renowned legal practitioner and former President of the Ghana Bar Association, Tony Forson. The nominations were made following consultations with the Judicial Council, in strict adherence to constitutional provisions governing judicial appointments.
According to the Presidency, the selections reflect a deliberate emphasis on jurisprudential depth, institutional experience and professional integrity. Justice Amoako Asante brings an international dimension to the nominations, having previously served as President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice before resuming duties on the domestic bench. His tenure at the regional court is expected to enrich the Supreme Court’s perspective on human rights and supranational law.
Justice Bernasko-Essah, a respected voice on the Court of Appeal, is noted for her incisive reasoning in constitutional and commercial matters. Mr Forson, for his part, is widely regarded within legal circles for his advocacy, scholarship and leadership of the Bar, attributes that position him to contribute meaningfully to appellate jurisprudence.
If confirmed by Parliament, the appointments will expand the membership of the Supreme Court from eighteen to twenty-one justices. The enlargement comes at a time of growing docket pressure and heightened public scrutiny of judicial pronouncements on governance, elections and fundamental rights.
The nominations will now proceed to the Appointments Committee for vetting, after which recommendations will be laid before the full House. The outcome will shape the interpretive direction of the court and its ability to deliver timely and authoritative judgments.
