DVLA To Replace All Ghana Vehicle Plates
ACCRA — The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority has announced a nationwide replacement of all vehicle number plates, with the exercise scheduled to run over a two-year period from January 1, 2027, to December 31, 2028, as part of a comprehensive modernisation of Ghana’s vehicle registration and identification architecture.
The initiative seeks to standardize plate design, enhance security features, and integrate registration data with digital traffic management and law enforcement systems. Officials say the rollout will address inconsistencies, curb counterfeiting, and improve vehicle traceability across jurisdictions.
According to Metro TV Online, the DVLA stated that the new plates will incorporate advanced anti-tamper elements and machine-readable specifications to support automated verification and road safety operations. The authority emphasized that the phased approach is designed to minimize disruption while ensuring full compliance within the stipulated window.
Transport analysts note that the reform aligns with broader digitalization efforts within the public sector, including inter-agency data sharing between the DVLA, police, and insurance providers. The replacement is expected to streamline ownership records, expedite stolen vehicle recovery, and strengthen revenue mobilization through more accurate fleet profiling.
Contextually, Ghana’s current plate system has faced challenges with duplication, fading, and non-uniform issuance, prompting calls for a secure, centralized registry. The two-year transition provides vehicle owners, commercial operators, and importers time to migrate without bottlenecks, with DVLA offices and accredited centers expected to manage issuance and decommissioning.
As implementation nears, stakeholders will be watching for public education, cost structures, and logistical coordination.
