3 Arrested Over NPP Elections Disruption
Suspects Believed To Have Disrupted Constituency Executive Elections in Obuasi Apprehended by the Police
Three persons have been arrested and arraigned before court for allegedly disrupting the New Patriotic Party’s Constituency Executive Election at Bidieso in Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.
The suspects, identified as Haruna Iddrisu 38, also known as Dole, Osei Boateng 28, popularly called Nana Osei, and Charles Opoku 38, alias Blackman, are accused of storming the polling station during the election on July 12, 2026, armed with offensive weapons.
According to the Ashanti South Regional Police Command, the suspects allegedly invaded the voting centre, scattered ballot boxes and intimidated election officials as well as voters, bringing the electoral process to a halt and creating fear among party members gathered to cast their ballots.
Police said a reinforcement team was immediately dispatched to the scene following reports of the disturbance. The officers swiftly intervened, arrested the three suspects and restored calm, allowing security personnel to secure the area.
During the operation, police retrieved an axe and a cutlass believed to have been used by the suspects during the incident. The weapons have since been retained as exhibits to assist with ongoing investigations.
The suspects were subsequently arraigned before the Bekwai Circuit Court on charges of conspiracy to commit crime and rioting with weapons. The suspects however pleaded not guilty to all the charges levelled against them.
The court granted each of the accused persons bail in the sum of GH¢50,000 with two justified sureties pending the determination of the case.
According to the Police reports, the case has been adjourned to August 10, 2026, for further hearing.
Meanwhile, the Ashanti South Regional Police Command says investigations into the incident are ongoing, with efforts underway to identify and arrest other individuals believed to have participated in the disruption.
The police with this report, cemented their commitment to maintaining law and order especially during political activities and warned that anyone found engaging in acts of violence, intimidation or conduct likely to undermine public peace and democratic processes will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
