Residents Demand Removal of Fulani Herdsmen

Residents of the Monome-Drakate Electoral Area in the Akatsi South Municipality of the Volta Region on Wednesday staged a peaceful protest to demand the removal of Fulani herdsmen from their communities over what they describe as growing security and safety concerns.

The demonstration attracted a heavy police presence, with about 40 personnel from the Akatsi Police Command deployed to maintain law and order. The security operation was led by the Akatsi Divisional Police Commander, ensuring the protest proceeded without incident.

Carrying placards and chanting slogans, the protesters marched through parts of the community before presenting a petition to the Akatsi South Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Daniel Dagba.

The residents expressed deep concern over the activities of Fulani herdsmen in the area, alleging that their presence has heightened insecurity, created conflicts over land use, and threatened the safety and livelihoods of community members. They appealed to the municipal authorities and relevant state institutions to intervene urgently before the situation escalates.

According to the petitioners, they have endured persistent challenges they associate with the activities of the herdsmen and believe decisive action is needed to restore peace and protect their farms, properties, and communities.

Receiving the petition on behalf of the Assembly, Hon. Daniel Dagba assured the protesters that their concerns had been acknowledged and would be forwarded to the appropriate authorities for the necessary attention. He commended the residents for conducting themselves peacefully throughout the demonstration and encouraged them to remain calm as efforts are made to address the issues raised.

The peaceful protest ended without any reported disturbances, with the police maintaining security until the demonstrators dispersed.

The protest adds to growing calls in some parts of the country for stronger measures to address recurring tensions between farming communities and cattle herdsmen, particularly over land use, crop destruction, and community safety.
