Police Detain Teacher Over Viral Student Assault Footage

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has apprehended a teacher from Nyinahini Catholic Senior High School following public outrage over a widely circulated video depicting the alleged physical assault of a female student, intensifying scrutiny of corporal discipline in Ghanaian educational institutions.

According to the Ashanti Regional Police Command, the suspect, identified as Eric Buernortey Apaflo, was taken into custody after the disturbing footage gained traction across digital platforms, prompting swift intervention from law enforcement and child protection agencies. The command confirmed that preliminary investigations have commenced to ascertain the circumstances and culpability surrounding the incident.

According to Metro TV, the video captures the educator striking the adolescent within a classroom setting, eliciting condemnation from civil society organisations, parent associations, and human rights advocates who have decried the act as a violation of the child’s dignity and contravention of the Ghana Education Service code of conduct. The victim has since received medical evaluation and psychosocial support.

The arrest rekindles perennial debate over the enforcement of the ban on corporal punishment in pre-tertiary schools, a directive that remains unevenly implemented despite repeated ministerial pronouncements. According to child welfare specialist Dr. Ethel Adjorlolo, such incidents underscore systemic gaps in teacher training, accountability frameworks, and the institutionalisation of alternative disciplinary paradigms that safeguard student welfare.

According to the Ghana Education Service, administrative sanctions will proceed in tandem with criminal proceedings, with the Nyinahini Catholic Senior High School governing board convening an emergency session to review supervisory lapses and reinforce safeguarding policies. The service reiterated its zero-tolerance posture toward abuse and pledged collaboration with security agencies to ensure justice.
