MP Urges End to Power Outages Amidst Exams

The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe Constituency, Hon. Jerry Ahmed, has appealed to the government to restore stable electricity supply to facilitate the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) process. According to #GhanaEye, Ahmed emphasized that the ongoing power outages, popularly known as “dumsor,” could negatively impact students’ performance, leading them to blame their poor results on the unstable power supply.

Ahmed expressed concern that some communities in his constituency have been experiencing continuous power cuts lasting over four days, disrupting daily life and compromising essential services. He criticized the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) for failing to communicate planned maintenance or disruptions, causing severe inconvenience to residents.

“Weija-Gbawe appears to have been disproportionately affected, with some communities experiencing continuous outages for more than four days and, in certain instances, even longer,” Ahmed stated. He urged the Ministry of Energy, GRIDCo, and ECG to take immediate and decisive action to address the issue.

The MP’s appeal comes amidst concerns about the impact of power outages on Ghana’s education sector. Ahmed warned that the situation is endangering lives and compromising the delivery of essential services, including healthcare and education.

The government has been urged to prioritize the resolution of the power crisis to ensure a stable electricity supply for the BECE exams.
