Ghana Unveils New Embassy in Addis Ababa

Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, has commissioned the newly built Chancery of the Embassy of Ghana in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, marking a significant milestone in the country’s diplomatic history. The project is part of the government’s Strategic Transitioning from Rental to Infrastructure Development (STRIDE) initiative, aimed at reducing expenditure on rent and strengthening Ghana’s diplomatic infrastructure abroad.

According to Ghana News, the President recalled the historic relations between Ghana and Ethiopia, highlighting their shared legacy as founding members of the former Organisation of African Unity (OAU), now the African Union (AU). He emphasized the importance of having a permanent and befitting Chancery in Addis Ababa to advance Ghana’s bilateral relations with Ethiopia and multilateral engagement at the African Union.

Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, described the commissioning as a major milestone in Ghana-Ethiopia relations and a demonstration of Ghana’s commitment to continental diplomacy. He noted that the initiative was conceived during President Mahama’s first term and is a testament to the government’s commitment to enhancing ties with Ethiopia and promoting multilateralism.

Ethiopia’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Gedion Timothewos, reiterated that the commissioning of the new Chancery shows Ghana’s determination to deepen bilateral relations with Ethiopia and advance continental objectives within the African Union framework. He expressed confidence that the Chancery would enhance Ghana’s diplomatic engagement and serve as a symbol of continued cooperation.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, and the Ghanaian community in Ethiopia.
